Your NHS number – safety in numbers

Everyone registered with the NHS in England and Wales has their own unique NHS Number.

Using your NHS Number to identify you correctly is an important step towards avoiding mistaken identity and improving the safety of your healthcare.

If you can show your NHS Number to healthcare staff it helps them find your records more easily and share them safely with others who are caring for you.

If you want to know your NHS number you can find it on:

  • Your medical card given to you when you registered with a GP Practice

  • Some prescriptions and repeat prescription slips

  • Some letters you receive from the NHS.

If your GP is in Kent, you can also get your NHS Number from the Kent Primary Care Agency. Please complete the application form and send to:

Kent Primary Care Agency

11 Station Road

Your NHS number is important in improving the safety of your healthcare. Please take it with you whenever you access health services.
