All cataract referrals from the eastern and coastal Kent area are handled by the Referral Management Centre. Referrals can be made by either an accredited optometrist or a GP.
On receipt of the referral a Patient Care Co-ordinator will telephone the patient to discuss the options available to them and book the first outpatient appointment at the chosen provider, at a date and time agreed with the patient. Patients not referred via this pathway will not be offered a choice of provider and will not be booked on a one stop cataract clinic with a cataract specialist, which may result in more than one trip to an outpatients department.
