These lipid modification guidelines have been agreed following consultation with local consultants, GPSIs in cardiology and PBC clinical leads. They provide an evidence based approach to the cost effective use of lipid modification medication.
The key messages are:
Use Simvastatin 40mg first line for primary and secondary prevention.
Ezetimibe has not been demonstrated to improve patient-orientated outcomes. Evidence for the efficacy of ezetimibe is based on surrogate outcomes. Patients on this drug should be reviewed in accordance with these guidelines.
The guidelines will support PBC clusters to achieve the statin and ezetimibe aspect of their PBC prescribing action plans.
