Who we are and what we do

NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent was formed in October 2006 following the mergers of five Primary Care trusts (PCT); Ashford PCT, Canterbury and Coastal PCT, East Kent Coastal Teaching PCT, Shepway PCT and Swale PCT.

NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent has just over £1 billion to invest in healthcare for the 732,00 people spread over 700 square miles living in the Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Shepway, Swale and Thanet areas.

We strive to:

  • Improve health and reduce health inequalities

  • Put the citizen at the centre of all that we do

  • Develop a strong partnership between clinicians and managers to improve services

  • Work closely with others, especially social services, local NHS Trusts and the voluntary sector; making partnership working the norm rather than the exception

  • Pursue perfection in the safety and quality of clinical services.

As well as commissioning primary, community and acute hospital care, the PCT directly manages approximately 4,000 staff who work in services such as district nursing, health visiting, health promotion, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, school nursing, community dentistry and learning disabilities.

We also management responsibility for five community hospitals in the area:

  • Faversham Cottage Hospital - Faversham

  • Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital – Herne Bay

  • Whitstable & Tankerton Hospital – Whitstable

  • Victoria Memorial Hospital – Deal

  • Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital – Sittingbourne

  • Sheppey Community Hospital – Isle of Sheppey.

How we fit into the NHS structure

The National Health Service (NHS) is a large part of the public sector. Primary Care Trusts such as NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent receive funding from The Department of Health to assess local needs and commission healthcare services for that area.

NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent is one of eight PCTs encompassed by the South East Coast Strategic Health Authority (SHA).
